Meet the Team
Dermot S. Smurfit is our Chief Executive Officer and a member of our Board of Directors. Dermot joined GAN as a director in 2003 and became Chief Executive Officer in 2010. He previously worked in the European Investment Banking team of SoundView Technology Group. He has operational and management experience in online gaming through his experience with GAN, together with M&A, strategic advisory and private equity financing experience in the gaming technology industry. Dermot is a qualified (non-practicing) U.K. lawyer specialized in corporate finance. His education encompasses an LLB in Law from Exeter University, the Legal Practice Course from the College of Law (U.K.) and the Investment & Corporate Finance advisory qualification from the U.K.’s Financial Conduct Authority.
Karen Flores is our Chief Financial Officer, serving in that role since January 2020. Karen has over 15 years’ experience in senior financial management roles. Immediately prior to joining GAN, Karen served as Vice President, Corporate Financial Planning & Analysis of Alorica, Inc. Before then, she served as Senior Director of Financial Planning and Analysis for the Walt Disney Company, following Disney’s acquisition of Maker Studios Inc., where she was serving as its Senior Vice President, Finance. Additional senior financial roles include positions with MySpace Music and Napster. Karen began her career as a financial analyst with Microsoft.
Don Ryan is our Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer, serving in that role since April 2020. Prior to joining the Company, Donald served as the Chief Executive Officer for Sports Information Group LLC from April 2018 to December 2019, the Senior Vice President of Gaming Development for Greenwood Gaming & Entertainment Inc. from April 2015 to April 2018, and the Senior Vice President of Gaming for Betfair Interactive US LLC from March 2014 to April 2015. Don has extensive experience in online and mobile consumer products and services, leveraging a range of business models including regulated transactions, affiliate partnerships, online subscriptions, e-commerce, white-label distribution, online advertising, virtual currencies and micro-transactions. Don holds a BS, Electrical Engineering from University of Alaska Fairbanks and an MBA from Northwestern University – Kellogg School of Management.
Simon Knock is our Chief Information Officer, serving in that role since July 2016. Simon joined GAN in September 2010 as Technical Director and has nearly twenty years of internet gambling industry experience. Prior to GAN, Simon held various technology development and management roles with U.K. operator William Hill and operations roles with Canadian online gaming software developer CryptoLogic, Inc. Simon has a software engineering background, originally developing UK Government revenue systems and private sector logistics products.
Jeff Berman is our Chief Commercial Officer, serving in that role since February 2018 in his second stint with GAN, having previously spent 4 years with the company between 2009-2012 as our GM of North America. Jeff has more than 25+ years in the sports and entertainment sectors, having previously held key leadership roles at leading companies such as StubHub, Ticketmaster, CBS Sports, and Sentient Technologies. He additionally founded and subsequently sold VSX, a stock market portfolio tool, to Dow Jones & Company. Jeff received his B.A. from Duke University and his MBA from Georgetown University.
Mr. Arouh brings 26 years of legal and business experience to his new role at GAN and will oversee all of the Company’s global legal and regulatory affairs. He has served as Deputy Chief Legal Officer and Senior Vice President of the Company since February 2021, and dedicated outside counsel since June 2020. Prior to joining GAN, Mr. Arouh operated his own law firm where he represented numerous public companies in the internet gambling industry. Mr. Arouhbrings substantial experience in corporate law and governance, mergers and acquisitions, securities and transactional work, and managing legal risk while achieving business objectives.
Tom Ustunel joined in May 2020 as our Vice President of Gaming Operations. After graduating in Physics he went on to complete a Masters in Computing and has subsequently been working in online gaming for over 20 years. Previously running top tier operations in the UK including Grosvenor casino, Mecca Bingo, Sun Bingo, Bets and Vegas. Tom is responsible for driving GAN's product vision and strategy and is looking to deliver some of the best gaming products into the market.
Giuseppe Gardali is our Managing Director, working out of the UK, who joined GAN as an intern in August of 2008 after successfully graduating from a German University in Business Administration and Engineering. His efforts started in account management, building out the Italian regulated market for GAN, moving to an Operations director role in 2013, to help out with the first U.S. real-money gaming launch in New Jersey of Betfair (now part of Flutter), ending up in his current position, overseeing all development and support efforts, since September of 2018.
Meir Deutsch is our Chief Marketing Officer, serving in that role since November 2019. Meir joined GAN in April 2018 as Managing Director, GAN Digital and has over 20 years in senior Marketing roles and nearly 10 years of gambling and gaming industry experience. Immediately prior to joining GAN, Meir held digital marketing leadership roles at William Hill’s European operations. During his career, Meir served in senior strategy and marketing roles in a few internet and telecom startups, as well as established companies such as AOL, DST and Hutchison. Meir began his career at the American Chamber of Commerce. He received his BA in Economics and MBA from Tel Aviv University.
Mr. Karlsen's experience in gaming spans back to 2002. He served as Head of Poker for Nordicbet and Triobet for over ten years, has held various board positions in GAN Ltd. subsidiaries, and is one of Coolbet's first employees, starting as COO.
Prior to joining GAN, Ms. Wong served as Global VP, Head of People, at Dollar Shave Club, where she helped lead the transformation of the organizations structure from Direct-to-Consumer to Omni-Channel, built the company’s global talent management strategy, and drove efficiencies across several components of the organization. Before joining Dollar Shave Club, Wong served as VP of Talent Management and Operations and NBC Universal. Prior to that, Wong held roles in Change Management at Apple Inc. and Salesforce.
